UK Planning Permission

Town and Country Planning, the current system of controlling land use and construction of new buildings, has been in place since the end of the Second World War and remains a mainstay of our democracy.

In short there are usually two reasons why you might become caught up in the legal jungle that is 'planning permission': if you want to obtain planning permission to build something or if you want to stop somebody else from obtaining planning permission to build something.

It is a fact that nearly all new buildings and any appendages to existing buildings need to be granted UK planning permission from the local council before they are built.

Whether you intend to build a new garage, a conservatory or a playroom for the kids, you will have to abide by UK planning permission regulationsand if you don't you may just have to knock it all down again.

Advice on obtaining planning permission is especially important when it comes to buying a new house because, although that lovely extension may have been the main selling point of the property, it doesn't mean that the previous owner ever had planning permission for it - many a new homeowner has found this out their horror!

Furthermore if you are buying a house with a view to altering it in some way, you again need the advice of a consultant as this won't always be possible.

In general it is a positive thing, as it allows us to improve our environments and communities to suit our needs, whilst taking into account the needs of future generations.

In reality however it is often used in rather less positive ways, from political ammunition to a way of 'keeping up with the Joneses' - or at least stopping them from keeping up with you!
